50th Anniversary Medicare Celebration

On July 30, 2015, the Leadership Council of Aging Organizations (LCAO), including the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC), held a reception honoring the 50th Anniversary of Medicare, Medicaid and the Older Americans Act. The reception was held in the Kennedy Caucus Room in the Russell Senate Building. In attendance with the LCAO and NAHC to cut the cake celebrating these important programs was Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), Chair of the Senate Aging Committee, as well as Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI).

Max Richtman, President of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, provided opening remarks and then introduced NAHC President Val J. Halamandaris. In his remarks, Halamandaris said it was a “great honor” to introduce Senator Collins as someone who leads through caring. “I will tell you from experience there is no more caring person on the planet than Senator Susan Collins,” Halamandaris said.

Both Senator Collins and Senator Whitehouse spoke about the important roles of Medicare, Medicaid and the Older Americans Act. Senator Collins thanked the home care and hospice community for its advocacy and important work across the country. The Senate, she said, “could not do the work that we do to preserve important programs like Medicare” without their help.
